Downsizing Your Home: A Guide for Homeowners

Your path to Downsizing

Like many of us in the sandwich generation, we are smack in the midst of helping our parents downsize their existing home as they move to a much smaller space. Or you are proactive empty nester, retiree or anyone choosing to move to a smaller space before.   Distilling the possessions you have accumulated over the years down to the bare essentials  can been stressful and emotional.

Helpful Guidance !

Start Early- The first downsizing tip is that this process would be much easier to handle over a longer period of time than it is over a short period of time. With a longer period of time, you can help diffuse the onslaught of the concentrated stress and emotions.

Be Realistic -How much space do you need?  Only keep the items that bring you  joy. Famous words of ;Marie Kondo, who wrote  "The life Changing Magic of Tidying Up"  is an excellent read.

Be Creative:  It’s no secret that most Canadians are relying on their home to fund part of their retirement. If you sold your $1,500,000 house and moved to an $800K condo, what opportunities and doors would that open for you? Travel? Earlier retirement?

Be honest: How often will your kids really visit?

Stress relief: Neighbourhood Change

Lifestyle: The biggest adjustment to a downsize is your lifestyle. Likely you will be giving up hosting big family reunions, but you’ll also gain time and cold hard cash. What kind of life do you want to live?
